Please encourage teachers and students in grades 4 - 12 at your school or in your library service area to participate. Homeschoolers are welcome as well.

  • Level 3 (grades 9-12) entries must be postmarked by December 4, 2015.
  • Level 1 (grades 4-6) and Level 2 (grades 7-8) entries must be postmarked by January 11, 2016.

The 23rd annual writing contest for young readers is made possible by a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, with additional support from gifts to the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, which promotes the contest through its affiliate Centers for the Book, State Libraries and other organizations. This is the 11th year that Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, has sponsored Letters About Literature as part of Washington Reads. For additional information, contact Crystal Lentz at [email protected] or 360-704-5275. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) THE FUTURE STEMS FROM READING GRANT CYCLE - APPLY NOW The Washington State Library (WSL) wants to help school libraries update their science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) collections. An advisory committee of teacher-librarians recommended 230 STEM book collections using lists of award-winning books aimed at elementary, middle, and high school students. WSL is awarding 230 STEM book collections. Each collection has 50 awarding-winning STEM books, plus three professional titles for teachers. The collections, purchased from Follett, will be shelf ready, i.e. the books will have jackets and appropriate spine labels. The collections are materials from the 500 and 600 Dewey numbers. Most copyrights are post 2012. There are:
  • 120 elementary school collections
  • 55 middle school collections
  • 55 high school collections
The grants will be awarded via a one page application available here. All public and non-profit elementary and secondary schools in Washington are eligible to apply. Application deadline: postmarked or hand delivered by 4:00 p.m. Friday, October 30, 2015. For more information. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) HEALTH INFORMATION CLASSES National Network of Libraries of Medicine Pacific Northwest Region (NN/LM PNR) is offering two free classes for library staff who work with patrons who need public health information. “Public Health Information on the Web” will be offered for 4 CE credits from the Medical Library Association. This hands-on class will highlight web resources tailored to the public health workforce, including health education, promotion, and research. Three asynchronous modules will be available online from October 28 to November 25, 2015. “Health on the Range: Rural Health Issues and Resources” is worth 2 CE credits from the Medical Library Association. This class shows resources of interest to libraries who serve in small towns and rural areas. This class is offered live online Thursday, November 5 from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time but will be recorded for those who cannot make it for the live session. Class exercises will be given out to attendees to complete and email back to the instructor no later than Thursday, November 19, 2015. CE credit is available to those who complete both parts of the class and it is eligible for the Medical Library Association’s Consumer Health Information Specialization (CHIS). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) PROTECTING CULTURAL COLLECTIONS WORKSHOP Protecting Cultural Collections: Disaster Prevention, Preparedness, Response & Recovery workshop is offered on Friday, November 13, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Odegaard Library, University of Washington in Seattle. The “Protecting Cultural Collections” training is presented in a sequence of two archived webinars plus one in-person workshop to produce the following outcomes:
  • Complete a disaster response & collection salvage plan
  • Learn how to train staff to implement your plan effectively
  • Set pre- and post-disaster action priorities for your collections
  • Understand practical decision-making skills needed during an emergency
  • Experience salvage procedures for books, documents, photos & objects
The workshop is free. Participation in the in-person workshop requires viewing the archived webinars before attending the in-person workshop. Any exception requires the permission of the instructor. The webinar sessions and the in-person workshop are scheduled to enable participants to prepare short assignments between sessions, resulting in a completed disaster plan. Participating institutions will be invited to join an informal network of WESTPAS trained personnel to provide mutual aid in the event of emergencies involving collections in your region. Who should attend: administrators and staff responsible for emergency preparedness, response and decision-making, in all types of cultural institutions. By registering for the workshop, the institution commits to supporting the attendee(s) to achieve the workshop's disaster preparedness goals. When possible, please support two attendees so they can work together on the disaster preparedness activities. Instructor: Gary L Menges, Librarian Emeritus, University of Washington, WESTPAS trainer. Cost: No charge to the institution. Funding provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Sponsored by Western States & Territories Preservation Assistance Service (WESTPAS) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) WASHINGTON EDUCATORS’ CONFERENCE The 2015 Washington Educators’ Conference will take place October 25-26 at the Seattle Marriott Bellevue.
  • This annual, two-day event is for all educators in Washington State – superintendents, central office administrators, principals, assistant principals, other building-level administrators, teachers, and teacher leaders.
  • Hot issues in education in Washington will be highlighted by national keynote speakers and in best practices concurrent sessions.
