By KCTS Seattle in collaboration with the Washington State Historical Society. (Seattle, WA: KCTS Television, 1996. 1 sheet. Illustrations, biographical references. This item is a viewer's guide for the KCTS television program Different lenses: the photography of Edward & Asahel Curtis. The program is a documentary about two great photographers who witnessed the exciting history of the Pacific Northwest at the turn of the century. They were brothers, yet their stories could not have been more different. Edward, obsessed with the past, became famous for his artistic portrayals of traditional American Indian life. Asahel Curtis trumpeted the future and optimistically recorded the making of a vigorous industrial society. As the modern world was built around them, Asahel and Edward Curtis created visions of the Northwest that have lived in people's minds ever since. This collection consists of the personal and working files collected by Arthur “Art” Dwelley for research purposes. It isn't clear when he started the collection (probably around 1963?) but it contains primary as well as secondary sources for his writings. Dwelley's family had published a newspaper in Concrete, WA where he learned the newspaper business. Throughout his life he either worked at or owned newspapers in the Thurston County area. In both his professional and personal life he was an ardent researcher and author of historical articles, not only for his own paper, but other publications including the Society's magazine, Columbia. This collection consists of research files and related ephemera photographic negatives, slides and prints that include glass plate negatives, film strip negatives and slides newspapers and clippings notebooks & miscellaneous ephemera computer discs and diskettes. The glass plate negatives sizes are: 12.6 cm. x 10.1 cm. 17.8 cm. x 12.6 cm. 12.5 cm. x 17.6 cm. The slides consist of three types: Pakon, Ektachrome and Kodaslide. Arthur “Art” Dwelley was a long time Tenino resident and former publisher and editor of the Tenino Independent. He was born 6 Feb. 1930 in Anacortes, WA, the only child of Helen L. (Grubb) and Charles Muth Dwelley, members of a pioneer Washington family. Art attended schools in Concrete and learned the newspaper business from his father who was the publisher of the Concrete Herald. Art and Anne (Payette) married in July 1950 and became the parents of four daughters. After Art's divorce in 1962, her married Rita Eilene Chesterfield, known as Eilene, in October 1963. Art worked for several newspapers, including the Ferndale Record, Oak Harbor News and Edmonds Tribune-Review, as well as the Seattle Times, before purchasing the Thurston County Independent in Tenino in August 1966. The name of the newspaper was later changed to the Tenino Independent. Although the Dwelleys sold the paper in February 1993, Art continued to write his popular column Coffee Break until July 2000, when his illness became acute. Art was very active in civic affairs. He served as president of the Tenino Chamber of Commerce for several years chairman of the first Oregon Trail Days grand marshal of the Tenino 1993 parade president & lifetime member of the South Thurston County Historical Society board member of the Thurston County Historical Commission board member for the Washington State Historical Society, including serving during the design and construction of the new museum in Tacoma secretary, treasurer and board member of the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association served on the Centennial '89 Committee for Thurston County named one of 80 prominent citizens in the county for the 1980s by the Olympian. Art was an ardent researcher and author of numerous historical articles that included his own newspaper the Olympian Washington State Historical Society's magazine, The Columbia. While publishing the Independent, he wrote and published Prairies and Quarries, a history of Tenino. Art and his wife were avid travelers. Detailed finding aid available at WSL. http://stlow.iii.com/search~S13?/o884345380 MS 0602: Toppenish Roundup postcard collection, 1914 [graphic]. [Place of publication cannot be identified]: NOKO [Publisher], [between 1914-1929]." 1 binder (2 postcards) Title supplied by cataloger MS 0602 Non-circulating. These two black & white postcards (9 x 14 cm.) depict bronco riding and bull riding from the Toppenish Roundup and Rodeo that was held in Toppenish, Yakima County, WA in 1914. These appear to be reproductions of photographs that were taken at the Roundup. The original photos had been labeled in white ink on the front of the photograph and it is captured on the postcard. One postcard is labeled: A.E. Dillon. Going up, by the help of Uncle Sam, Round-Up Toppenish, Wn. #17 Copyright 1914, Keller & Moore. It depicts a man being bucked off a bull, named Uncle Sam. The other postcard is labeled: Jason Stanley on Cyclone, Round Up, Toppenish, Wn. #25. It depicts a cowboy bronc riding a horse, named Cyclone, with another cowboy watching. Both postcards appear to be published by the NOKO Company and from the design of the stamp box between 1914 and 1929. The Toppenish Roundup was held in Toppenish, Yakima County, WA from Sept. 3 through Sept. 6, 1914. The Roundup was a four day gathering that included events for participants and spectators. The cowboy half-mile race and stage coach race, fancy-riding, roping, and bucking contests, and an Native American dance and ceremony were a few of the events. The final day was concluded with a parade through the streets of the city of Toppenish. For the 1914 Roundup, the attendance exceed 10,000 with over 200 local Native Americans taking part and staying in a temporary village that was erected on site. The Toppenish photographer, Harry Eston Maris, captured many images from the Roundup. These postcards may be reproductions of Maris' photos or there may be another source of the images. The Toppenish Roundup has continued throughout the years although the name has varied over time. It has been known as the Toppenish Roundup, Toppenish Roundup and Rodeo and Toppenish Pow Wow and Rodeo. It is held today (2016) on the 4th of July each year. http://stlow.iii.com/search~S13?/o942674518 MS 0603: The Space Needle Restaurant: Seattle, U.S.A., [1962?]. Seattle, Wash.: Western Hotels, Inc., [1962?] 1 binder (1 sheet) This collection consists of a menu from the Space Needle Restaurant in Seattle, WA. It is one sheet 35 x 40 cm. folded to 35 x 16 cm. Once opened-- the inside fold has a golden colored raised illustration of the Space Needle. The back of the menu has a short history of the Space Needle with Opened on April 21, 1962 printed on it. It is believed that although the menu was not used on opening day, it is definitely a menu from the restaurant's early days and representative of the cuisine that was being served at the time. The Century 21 Exposition (also known as the Seattle World's Fair) was held April 21, 1962 to October 21, 1962 in Seattle, Washington. As planned, the exposition left behind a fairground and numerous public buildings and public works some credit it with revitalizing Seattle's economic and cultural life. The Fair saw the construction of the Space Needle, which includes a revolving restaurant. The restaurant has come to be known as the Eye of the Needle. The Space Needle has become a symbol of Seattle itself and of picturesque magnificence of the Pacific Northwest. The Needle's original idea of a revolving circular restaurant atop a commercial shaft evolved into a novel design combining stability and grace. The erection of the main steel structure was accomplished with an ingenious built-in crane which lifted itself along the tower. Within one year, those encapsulated elevators brought diners to the restaurant level for an hour long sweep of panoramic views that include mountains, waters, green shorelines, and a city multi-jeweled by night. This dining experience remains to this day (2016). http://stlow.iii.com/search~S13?/o942691309 WSL has related materials.
