“Who are we?” exhibit speakers offer wise words

We’re still aglow from last week’s launch of the “Who are we?” exhibit created by our terrific Legacy Washington team. At the launch, we were thrilled to hear moving speeches by three of the Washingtonians featured in the exhibit. Here are excerpts:

“We are in an era in which it’s almost sinful to defend government. And that is a real shame, because government is a necessary institution in a free society in order for it to work. And government will only survive under freedom, and under the system that we have created back more than 200 years ago. It works if people believe that it’s defending their interest, it’s looking out for them.” – Bill Ruckelshaus

“It’s remarkable to be in this room, in the state of Washington, in the Capitol of the state. And remembering a time when Native American people and the state were actually at odds with each other. I’m really proud and blessed to be a Washingtonian at this time. To be able see the transition that has happened here in the state of Washington for all people from all walks of life.” – JoAnn Kauffman

“If we hold the land, and its wonders, as sacred, we will also realize that all humans who inhabit the land in Washington are also sacred beings. Embracing the people of Washington as sacred beings, means we will do whatever is necessary to build peaceful relationships with other people, and to do everything within our power to advance the greater good for all people. So, showing love and respect for the land, its wonders, and its people is what it means to be a Washingtonian.” – Duane French
