OLYMPIA — Former U.S. Senator Slade Gorton died Wednesday morning at the age of 92. Secretary of State Kim Wyman released the following statement:
“Washington state lost one of its fiercest leaders and greatest champions today.
“A giant in Washington politics, Slade defined servant leadership. From his time in the Army and Air Force to his years of service in the state Legislature, as our state’s attorney general, and in Congress, he built a legacy. His ability to foster community and reach consensus was rare and unparalleled in politics today. His fervor for our state and his genuine support of its leaders – regardless of party affiliation – inspired those around him. He left an indelible mark on my life, as well as many others.
“His brilliance knew no bounds. His understanding of constitutional law and his analytical mind made him formidable in debates, an effective lawmaker, and an exceptional leader. Slade’s intellect, combined with his penchant for progress, paved the way for his vast accomplishments, including helping clean up Lake Washington, playing an integral role in the Forward Thrust movement, and serving on the 9/11 Commission.
“My prayers are with his children Rebecca, Sarah and Tod, his siblings Mary Jane, Nathaniel, and Mike Gorton, Sr., his many friends, and everyone he mentored throughout his life.”
