Monthly Voter Registration Transactions

This data includes new registrations, address updates (including county to county transfers), and updates to registration type (indicating a new form of registration was received).

We collaborate closely with other state agencies that provide voter registration assistance. This collaboration, which includes training and reminders, has contributed to an increase in the total volume of Motor Vehicle and Agency transactions over the years.

Additional Notes

Prior to 2008, Motor Vehicle registrations involved the Department of Licensing providing a form that customers could return if interested in registering to vote. In early 2008, DOL began electronically transmitting customer information to the Secretary of State, requiring no effort on the part of customers that wished to opt in. In July of 2019, Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) was implemented and individuals applying for or renewing an Enhanced Washington Driver’s License or Identification card are automatically registered to vote or have their registration information updated unless they opt out. AVR, with the ability to opt out if they choose, is also available to citizens applying for services offered by the Department of Social and Health Services and the Washington Health Benefit Exchange.
