Braille Formats Training Class
Wednesdays, May 7, 2025 – June 2025
6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Online via Zoom
Instructor: Pam Lorenz
FUNdamentals of Formatting
This is an instructional class which is designed with braille literary transcribers in mind. If you’re new to transcribing braille and want a better understanding of how a print book is reproduced into braille, or if you’re an experienced transcriber and want a refresher on formatting, then this class is for you. Please note that this class will not be teaching the braille code, only focusing on the rules of formatting a literary print book.
We will be going through the Braille Formats Principles of Print-to-Braille Transcription, 2016. This will cover how to reproduce the different sections of a book from the front matter (title page, special symbols page, transcriber’s notes page, table of contents), to the end matter (bibliographies, notes, indexes), and everything in between.
Resources: Braille Formats Principles of Print-to-Braille Transcription, 2016 and The Rules of Unified English Braille, Third Edition 2024. You do not need to purchase any books to attend. A link is provided to have access to the braille books, or you can go to the Braille Authority North America (BANA) website and download your own copies for free.
Class Schedule: Class will be held virtually on Wednesday evenings, 6:00-8:00 p.m., via Zoom, for six to eight weeks. The first class is May 7, 2025, with classes continuing through June 2025.
